SoBran is seeking a Research Support Specialist III - Gnotobiotics to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
OVERVIEW: Responsible for all activities required for supporting/maintaining the gnotobiotic rodent colonies and relative studies for the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases located at NIH facilities.
Description of Duties:
Manage multiple animal studies running concurrently in different phases by following and complying respectively with the Animal Study Proposals.
Quantitate bacteria from collected animal tissues and organs and prepare nucleic acid, drug, and protein extracts as necessary
Identify major bacteria groups by basic microbiology techniques and PCR
Perform technical duties associated with the lab's Animal Study Proposals such as blood withdrawals, harvesting tissues or organs, gavaging, performing IP, IV and SQ injections in mice housed in gnotobiotic isolators
Maintain gnotobiotic rodent colonies (including setting up breeding pairs and harems and keeping track of litters and offspring). Organization of animal inventory associated with the lab's Animal Study Proposals in accordance with the relative standard operating procedures
Assist with the development of Animal Study Proposals in accordance with the relative standard operating procedures
Maintain integrity of the research process by following good laboratory practices, including detailed accurate record keeping methods, routine animal observations, data collection as well as procurement, processing, and preservation of specimens so as to maintain sample identification and prevention of cross contamination
Ability to learn the skills to perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures and techniques which may include, but are not limited to: cell culture, clinical/diagnostic microbiology, DNA analysis/isolation/purification/sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning, natural production isolation, organic synthesis, peptide synthesis, protein analysis, RNA isolation, etc.
Ability to learn the skills to perform the calibrating and operating of a variety of laboratory instruments used to perform tests, analyses, and other laboratory procedures which may include, but are not limited to: flow cytometers, peptide synthesizers, ELISA readers, HPLC systems, spectrophotometers, microcentriges, autoclaves, etc.
Practice universal precautions appropriate to different levels of ABSL. Work safely with animal/human pathogen biohazards and help to maintain the research animal facility as a safe work environment/operation
Maintain optimum care and maintenance of research equipment for the routine hygiene and disinfection of research implements, and acting as a facilitator for entry of service personnel and facility users
Schedule time in expectation for meetings with investigators, outside the facility if necessary, to assist in coordinating animal research needs
Serve as the main "point of contact" or "liaison" for the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases in conjunction with the Comparative Medicine Branch contract staff
Provide service and advice to investigators on executing their protocols
Report any animal health, care and/or well-being concerns to the appropriate facility management staff
Provide a detailed monthly report to Program Management by the 10th of every month
Prepare and place orders for laboratory animals and supplies, including maintaining accurate records on all orders placed and maintaining and filing invoices on all orders received
Coordinate animal shipments
Ability to work planned flexible hours and travel between NIH facility locations to ensure research needs and experiments are carried out to comply with appropriate timelines to include weekends and holidays as needed
Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements include: Bachelor of Science degree preferred and at least 2 years of experience working with mice; must be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or be eligible for the certification and become certified within 8 months of obtaining the position. Must have at least 1 year experience running PCR genotyping and knowledge of basic microbiology techniques. Must have experience in laboratory animal care and computer program proficiency such as MS Word/Access/Excel/email applications. Must have a proficient technical vocabulary. Knowledge and previous working with gnotobiotic isolators is preferred.
