Planned PEThood of Georgia is seeking one full-time (Monday through Friday) and one part-time (Saturdays only) veterinarian to provide veterinary care under our contract with Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Previous shelter medicine experience is preferred but other exceptional candidates that can demonstrate the ability and willingness to adapt to the shelter environment will be considered as well. BOTH POSITIONS ARE IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE.
Responsible for working with the vet assistants and county shelter staff to maintain the health of all animals in the shelter. Perform health and diagnostic exams and tests on animals. Prescribe medications and treatments for animals. Perform efficient spay/neuters (15 surgeries + daily) in addition to providing medical care. Mentorship from an experienced off-site shelter veterinarian is available but qualified candidates must be capable of performing assigned job duties as the sole veterinarian on duty.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (for the full-time veterinarian) include the following, and other duties may be assigned as needed.
Examine animals in the shelter for diseases, parasites, injuries and other afflictions.
Perform high volume spay/neuter surgery, including pediatric sterilizations, pyometras, spay aborts, cryptorchid castrations, and other surgical procedures as necessary (wound repairs, amputations, enucleations, etc.).
Perform diagnostic exams and medical procedures
Perform heartworm treatments
Treat injured or sick animals and perform first aid as needed.
Euthanize designated animals as needed.
Provide oversight in the training of county animal control officers to perform humane euthanasia.
Administer vaccinations and medications and run diagnostics tests, including but not limited to radiographs and bloodwork.
Assist with cruelty investigations and testify in court.
Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of medication and medical equipment.
Prepare and maintain records relating to veterinary activities, including controlled substance logs.
Maintain medical records in Shelter Buddy or other designated software system.
Supervise veterinary clinic staff and assign work schedules.
Coordinate with the Clinic Ops Manager on the training and evaluation of Clinic staff.
Assist with inventory management and work with shelter management and Purchasing Dept on budgeting estimates.
Provide advice over the telephone to shelter staff on Sundays regarding any shelter animal that needs non-urgent care.
Provide input to, and ensure adherence to, shelter protocols.
Participate in weekly management meetings with shelter staff.
Communicate with the Executive Director and/or Medical Director of Planned PEThood of Georgia regularly to ensure smooth execution of contracted services.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES for the part-time veterinarian are as described above, minus the administrative duties (management meetings, authoring shelter protocols, inventory management, work schedules, etc.). The part-time veterinarian is expected to coordinate with the full-time veterinarian in regards to patient care/needs or if any issues should arise.
