The Toledo Humane Society is a private nonprofit animal shelter located in Maumee, Ohio. Toledo Humane Society is looking for a shelter veterinarian to oversee health and wellness for 200+ animals in our care and to provide veterinary services to include but not limited to spay/neuter, other soft tissue surgery, and providing wellness care to prepare animals for adoption. Our medical department is equipped with a variety of medical equipment, including surgical suites, digital x-ray, dental cleaning and dental x-ray. We believe in a work/life balance.
Promote overall animal health and well-being including diagnosis and treatment of disease. Perform regular physical examinations and follow up on known medical issues; ensure proper documentation of animal medical records
Perform common elective and non-elective surgical procedures and direct peri-operative care. Perform necessary surgeries and medical treatments in accordance with accepted professional standards including the Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ Veterinary Medical Care Guidelines for Spay-Neuter Programs; keep license and insurance policy current and free of complaints
Prescribe and direct the administration of medications and vaccines as appropriate
Provide assistance to other departments with animal medical concerns or staff medical training as needed, including education, summer camps, etc.
Assist with public relations and educational outreach on matters pertaining to animal health; lead or participate in THS activities as needed or required
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD)
Eligible to be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Ohio. (We will pay fees.)
Current DEA license for controlled substances preferred (We will pay for renewal fees.)
Skill and ability to perform common surgical procedures, primarily high-quality, high volume spay-neuter, including pediatrics as well as mass removals, enucleation, amputation, etc.
Willingness and ability to make consistent and sound decisions regarding humane euthanasia in accordance with shelter policy.
Previous experience as a shelter veterinarian or special interest or training in shelter medicine practice or related field preferred, new graduates with shelter medicine training or background are welcome to apply
Ability to work effectively, independently and in a team; in atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, deadline pressures; to be flexible, detail orientated; to prioritize
Excellent interpersonal skills with customer service orientation. Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, professionally
Ability to take charge and react calmly and quickly in a crisis situation
Computer literacy with proficient us of programs including Microsoft Office programs, email, Internet and database software
Willingness and ability to work hours necessary for successful organizational operations.
