Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: People Management/Managing Patient Flow (20%): - Oversees the daily medical care and case flow of the animals housed in CARE.
- Leads the Daily CARE Medical rounds meeting.
- Leads monthly CARE LVT meeting.
- Develops, disseminates and keeps current the CARE Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and ensures their implementation. SOP’s must balance best shelter medicine practices with the needs of AAH and other departments.
- Models a standard of continued commitment to improve and expand upon all aspects of CARE including, medical, behavior, housing, safety and animal flow
- Supervises staff and holds regular one-on-one meetings with each direct report, gathering ideas and information, providing coaching and informing them on updates.
- Practices and espouses positive, people-centric management approaches that are in line with team and organizational core values.
- Recommends internal and external training opportunities as needed for direct reports in identified areas.
- Responds to concerns from direct reports and selected administrative staff, addressing them promptly and accordingly.
- Handles employee-relations issues with confidentiality and care, ensuring compliance with any applicable collective-bargaining agreements.
- Conducts corrective actions related to performance.
- Maintains proactive communication with the Senior Director as to any critical situations or issues.
- Supports the Senior Director and Medical Director in handling any adverse client or patient events appropriately and professionally.
- Disseminates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to staff on the floor and ensures their implementation.
- Models a standard of continual commitment to improvement in all aspects of CARE patient care and handling of dogs and cats.
- Serves as a champion in times of change management and proactively assists the CARE Leadership team in identifying ways to improve people policies and medical protocols.
- Assists the AAH Office Manager and Hospital Administrator to ensure CARE has appropriate DVM coverage 7 days per week.
- In collaboration with the AAH management team, ensure the CARE veterinary team is scheduled for all required trainings, meetings and lectures.
Managing Medical Cases (60%): - Performs medical intakes on all new NYPD and CE cases admitted to CARE and in collaboration with partner departments for animals admitted to veterinary partner hospitals, AAH, ARC, and Adoption Center as needed.
- Provides medical support for larger scale NYPD and CE cases.
- Performs exams, diagnostic tests and medical treatments with full utilization of Fear Free medical handling. Ensures LVTs and ACTs are practicing Fear Free handing.
- Provides high quality individualized care while maintaining overall population medicine using shelter best practices.
- Assesses medical prognosis and makes appropriate euthanasia decisions following ARC/CARE/AAH protocols and guidelines.
- Provides high-quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of cruelty, neglect, and at-risk patients.
- Develops skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment plans following ARC/CARE/AAH medical parameters and guidelines.
- Provides medical care for outpatients of owned, fostered out and/or animals in transition to the Adoption Center and placement partners.
- Maintains thorough, high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.
- Works with partner hospitals as needed, including referral for advanced care and assessing medical stability of new cases at partner hospitals.
- Responds to after-hours medical concerns.
- Oversees and maintains the CARE census.
Interdepartmental Communication/Administrative/Other (20%) - Collaborates and supports the work of partner departments, particularly the Humane Law Enforcement, Community Engagement and the Adoption Center departments.
- Maintains strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases.
- Attends weekly behavior and interdepartmental meetings.
- Attends staff meetings, doctor meeting and other requested meetings.
- Provides medical information and represent CARE to the public and to media when requested.
- Provides a high level of customer service to external and internal clients.
- Creates, models and follows written and verbally communicated ASPCA and CARE Standard Operating Procedures.
- Assists the Senior Director with special projects, presentations and data collection as requested
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements: - Ability to successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment that combines individual patient and shelter medicine and effectively multi-task with a high degree of integrity and accountability and without loss of attention to detail.
- Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively and courteously with all levels of staff.
- Maintain an open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols
- All duties and responsibilities are subject to change due to specific requirements of ASPCA/NYPD Partnership program needs.
- The CARE Medical Supervisor may be requested and/or required to work additional hours, weekends, cover shifts and/or stay late.
- May be required to work or provide medical support for disasters/weather coverage.

Language: English (required) Education and Work Experience: - DVM degree (or equivalent) with NY State veterinary license. (Required)
- Fear Free certification within 6 months of hire date.
- Previous experience in shelters preferred but not required.
Additional Information: - This is a full-time exempt position that works out of our 92nd Street office, but the incumbent must be flexible, as some early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays will be required.
