The Department of Clinical Studies – New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. The position will be in the Section of Surgery at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will be a DVM/VMD or equivalent with Diplomate or Board Eligible status in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, with demonstrated expertise in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation and evidence of scholarly activity related to this specialty.
The successful applicant will join our collaborative team of five DACVSMR-equine faculty members providing high-quality sports medicine and imaging services. The sports medicine service is supported by two large-animal radiologists (ACVR-LA, EDI diplomates), three ultrasound/cardiology experts (2 ACVIM, 2 PhD), an onsite farrier, and a multitude of clinicians in associated specialty services. New Bolton Center has a robust and diverse caseload, with an emphasis on sport horses. The elective surgery caseload is currently managed by 5 equine surgeons (3 of whom are ACVSMR diplomates), 1 farm-animal specialist, 6 surgery residents, and 6 rotating interns. The successful candidate will participate enthusiastically in the clinical activities of the Large Animal Sports Medicine service, including patient care and teaching and supervision of veterinary students and house officers; will contribute to the didactic and laboratory education of pre-clinical students; and will pursue an active individual or collaborative research program. Preference will be given to candidates whose clinical and research interests will complement and expand existing strengths at New Bolton Center.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to equine lameness evaluation and diagnostics, evaluation of poor performance in the athletic horse, upper and lower airway evaluations, high speed treadmill testing, pre-purchase evaluations, evaluation regarding referral for ancillary imaging (ultrasound, radiography, MR, CT, scintigraphy) and post injury rehabilitation in all large-animal species. Other responsibilities include participation in the clinical teaching of veterinary students and residents in Sports Medicine, attendance and participation in scheduled clinical rounds, seminars, laboratories, and conferences, and ongoing research investigations in the areas of equine sports medicine and rehabilitation. The successful candidate will also play a vital role in the planning and development of a proposed Equine Rehabilitation and Transition Center.
Qualifications: DVM/VMD or equivalent and Board Certification (or Board Eligible) in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR). Strong interest and experience in rehabilitation medicine, and a record of scholarly activity in this field, are desirable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative environment are also strongly desired.
The position will be in the Standing Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in the Clinician Educator track, supporting faculty members whose responsibilities include the traditional triad of research, clinical service, and teaching. The successful candidate will be appropriately apportioned to these academic areas depending upon their strengths. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The deadline for application is September 1, 2022 or until the position is filled; the anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.
