Small Animal Emergency Internship
About Willamette Veterinary Hospital:
Willamette Veterinary Hospital is a thriving small animal general practice and 24 hr emergency hospital that also sees exotics. Our culture carries a high standard of clinical practice and all the tools to achieve it at your fingertips -ultrasound, endoscopy, blood bank, isolation, radiography, and a fully equipped surgical suite. Our in-house point of care testing includes your basic CBC/Chem options to more advanced testing including PT/PTT, in-house cortisol, & blood gases. Our staff vets are certified to submit ultrasound and echocardiograms to remote specialists. We maintain a relationship with the Oregon Coast Aquarium where one of our staff vets serves as their main veterinarian for aquatic mammals. We are about 2-3 miles from the Oregon State Vet school and our staff holds a large diversity from energetic students (vet students, college students) to long-tenured senior nursing staff. We encourage diversity on many levels.
We have 13 DVMs - 4 in our GP group and 9 in the ER group. The environment is teaching-driven, collaborative, collegial, and supportive. We have intentional engagement with the community on several levels through community events and as the emergency veterinary hospital for our region. We have a reputation for growing our leaders and giving them concrete pathways to move forward based on their strengths and interests.
Since 2019, Willamette has hosted a small animal emergency internship at our Corvallis clinic. Our Willamette intern graduates have been wildly successful in the ER field and perform at advanced levels of clinical and surgical proficiency only 1-year post veterinary graduation. Interns leave with advanced ultrasound and client communication skills. Graduated interns have been able to move rapidly to the top of veterinarian associate compensation in the veterinary field. The graph below outlines financial salary growth from new graduates to 4 years post-internship based on the data of our graduated interns against the compensation of our experienced general practice veterinarians.
Start: Optimally July 1. For some candidates with unique circumstances, we may be able to extend the start date into August.
Length: The internship is for 1 year and meets the Oregon State Veterinary Medical Board Intern Permit requirements.
Qualifications: DVM or equivalent from an accredited veterinary institution. Oregon veterinary license. DEA license. Prior externship, site visit, prior employment, or other equivalent experience at Willamette is strongly recommended for serious candidates.

Rotations with GP service for surgery & dentistry experience to round out the individual's growth. Weekly onsite internship meetings with extensive CE curriculum and direct hands-on procedural learning. Oregon is one of the last frontiers of our country. Smack in the middle of Willamette is 1.5 hrs south of wonderfully weird Portland & the awe-inspiring Columbia River gorge. Only 1 hr from the gorgeous Oregon coast and 1-2 hr from the vast heights of the Cascade mountains. Across the mountains find the high desert in Bend & the birth of our wild & scenic rivers like the Deschutes & the Rogue. In Oregon, beauty surrounds you and outdoor recreation is at your fingertips.
