The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 100,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking a veterinarian to join our Education and Research Division team as an Assistant Director. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession. Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.
Focused on accreditation, the Assistant Director will work with staff, volunteer leadership and stakeholders to propose, develop and implement AVMA policies and programs concerning the accreditation of schools and colleges offering a professional degree in veterinary medicine. They will be responsible for conducting site visits, documentation, and recommendations working closely with AVMA governance entities including the Council on Education (COE) in the execution of their duties. They are also responsible for executing association policies, objectives and programs concerning veterinary education and accreditation. Approximately 40-50% travel is required, position may work remotely.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about AVMA’s mission and veterinary education. This is a unique opportunity for a veterinarian with a faculty background. Additional qualifications include:
DVM/VMD or equivalent degree required, an advanced degree or board certification are desirable
Minimum of ten years of veterinary related work experience with a working knowledge of veterinary education and utilization
Experience working with veterinary college administrators and knowledge of accreditation processes is highly preferred
Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal)
Skilled in diplomatic facilitation of consensus between multiple perspectives with the ability to interact and effectively communicate both with members of the scientific and non-scientific community
Must be able to handle multiple priorities and deadlines, functioning well autonomously and as a team member
Able to organize, plan and manage group meetings
Proactive, professional, accountable and results-oriented
Must be enthusiastic and innovative
Strong project management skills are required
Awareness of local, state and national issues regarding veterinarians
Strong involvement with organized veterinary medicine highly desirable
