Responsible for the health of shelter animals. Work with the vet assistant and kennel staff to maintain the health of all animals in the shelter. Provide instruction, advice and education to staff. Develop treatment protocols and standards for shelter animals. Perform health and diagnostic exams and tests on animals. Provide medication for animals. Perform spay/neuter surgery.

Examine animals in the shelter for diseases, parasites, injuries and other afflictions.
Perform high volume spay/neuter surgery, including pediatric sterilizations.
Perform diagnostic exams and medical or surgical procedures.
Participate in shelter rounds to identify medical issues.
Treat injured or sick animals and perform first aid as needed.
Euthanize animals as needed.
Develop medical protocols and standard procedures that prioritize the health of shelter animals.
Assist with training veterinary and animal care staff on disease prevention, detection and treatment.
Administer vaccinations and medications.
Assist with cruelty investigations and testify in court.
Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of medication and medical equipment.
Consult supervisors in the handling of unusual and/or difficult situations.
Prepare and maintain records relating to veterinary activities.
Maintain medical records.
Coordinate with the Clinic Manager on the training and evaluation of Clinic staff.
Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
DVM and license to practice in Georgia.
Expertise in shelter health.
Ability to develop and train medical staff.
Ability to stand for extended periods (at least 8 hours a day) and to bend and reach to perform assigned work activities.
Ability to interact with impounded dogs, cats and other animals including vicious, stray, sick or injured animals. Ability to handle seeing and dealing with animals that have been abused, neglected or treated cruelly.
Ability to learn animal management software system and accurately enter information into the software system.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, employee may be exposed to a kennel that is not air-conditioned and may be exposed to unpleasant kennel smells. May have to handle dogs and cats that are stray, injured, diseased or vicious.
Founded in 2002, LifeLine Animal Project (LifeLine) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. LifeLine is working to end the euthanasia of healthy and treatable dogs and cats in metro Atlanta shelters and is the managing organization of Fulton County Animal Services and the DeKalb County Animal Services shelter
